Global warming

Unread postby dc-10 » Sun Mar 15, 2009 9:19 pm

Not a topic I am well versed on but seems topical and interests me...
Are the changes in world temperature really a problem or are we just seeing the natural rises that would be expected at the end of the ice-age we are currently in?
My understanding is that the earth has gone through cooling and warming cycles throughout its past..although none so rapid as the current one.
Do i really need to stop gunning the engine of my car to intimidate pedestrians?

While the earth does go through natural cooling and heating cycles, I think this one is different. The massive amount of CO2 in the air is the cause of the problem. At the expense of sounding like a treehugging hippie, in my opinion, we should just plant more trees. Just turn the middle of America into a gigantic forest. Granted, that would take tons of freshwater to accomplish, the likes of which we cannot do.

However, I am willing to change my opinion when presented with new evidence.

The evidence is quite clear on this. The climate is changing more rapidly than at any other time in history that we know of. I think the media "buzz term" of global warming, is unhelpful as it suggests a definitive testable result. Rapid climate change is a much more accurate term, that doesn't lend itself so easily to misinterpritation.

If you are gunning your engine to intimidate pedestrians, it suggests to me that you are stopping too early ;)

I think the human contribution to GW is a crock of shit and is next to nothing in comparison to the natural cycle and the Sun's direct effects.

I'm all for planting trees cause they are beneficial to the air in general and make things look nicer. I agree we need to switch off of what we use to more efficient methods.

Pollution of my air is what I worry about, not warming.

I believe the social effect of the media hype is extremely postive. Recycling, waste reduction and general awareness of our environment. The inevitable truth is that humans need to move away from fossil fuels because they are running out.. no matter how we motivate it!
found a nicely written explanation of the anti-GW arguments...not infallible but interesting.

We need more nuclear power. We need a way to store the nuclear waste. Yucca Mountain was a good idea.

i agree with mistahtom but we need other alternative energy sources. i vote solar or wind.

I vote anything that doesn't eat up our metal/precious metal resources.

I think uranium can be regenerated with neutron bombardment. But the amount of energy to do it negates the energy spent on the fuel. I think a combination of all types energy sources would be the best.
